The tower of St. Jacob's Church was especially important for shipping. Ships could be seen from the tower. The tower could be seen from afar at sea, along with several other towers such as the Gevangentoren. In the St. Jacobskerk, two grave monuments remind of the VOC past. The grave monument of Jan Lambrechtsen Coolen hangs on a wall. In addition to being a director and merchant, Coolen was also mayor of Vlissingen. The second funerary monument belongs to Daniel Octavius Barwell. This memorial depicts a sinking East Indiaman. Coats of arms of the Lampsins family hang on the wall.

Historical indication:
the Sint Jacobskerk was built in the period 1308 - 1328. The church was enlarged around 1500 with a cruciform church and enlarged again in 1558.
In 1911, the church and tower were largely destroyed by fire. Reconstruction was completed in 1915. In 1954 the church was restored due to the heavy war damage of 1944.
The last restoration was carried out in 1998. The tower is not owned by the church, but the city of Vlissingen owns it.

The Grote of Sint Jacobskerk (German Great or St. Jacob's Church) is the Protestant main parish church to Vlissingen in the Dutch province of Zeeland.
The church, dedicated to St. James the Elder until the Reformation, was carved around 1320 by West Soubourg and became a pilgrimage station on the Way of St. James. The construction of today's late-Gothic parish church began around 1500, taking over from a predecessor building from the mid-14th century, the church tower and the choir with 5/8-end. The completion of the today Vlissinger Jakobskirche took place around 1558, this year is found in one of the side chapels.
