The museum is located in an old former country school from 1908. The listed building, which is located in a monument and local recreation area, was converted and expanded in 2002 as part of EUROGA 2002plus.

When the museum was founded (1980), the focus of the collection was on rural living and working environments. Since the mid-1980s, efforts have increasingly focused on expanding a collection of everyday history from the 20th century. Objects from work and everyday life are collected as evidence of the culture of the early industrial age. Accordingly, today the focus of the exhibition collection, which is exhibited on an area of 330 square meters, is no longer based only on the area of pre-industrial crafts and home economics, but also includes the industrial upheaval phase after the First World War in Heiligenhaus.

The Abtsküche Museum is a typical local history museum with a schoolroom, old pub interiors, a barber shop from the 1950s and 1960s, a kitchen, and toys. Admission is free. It is usually open Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 2:00 p.m. The website is well-maintained.
