This monument (Monument Guerre Franco-Prussienne) commemorates the residents of the Ardennes department, who gave their lives in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871).
The monument to the dead of 1870 was erected after a national contribution and was inaugurated in 1897.

"Honor and gratitude to those who die defending their country"
It depicts a Glory crowning a dying soldier with laurel (the group "for the fatherland"), two plaques show:
- the defense of the Bazeille bridge
- the attack of the African fighters (Floing battle)
France, depicted as a female figure with a bishop's staff chisels an inscription
"Impavidus numero victus": (fearless, he was defeated by numbers)

We are accustomed, upon seeing such a memorial to the dead, like the one we encounter here in Sedan, to thinking first of the two world wars that shook Europe in the first half of the 20th century. However, the history of this striking memorial stretches back several decades further: it commemorates the victims of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, which France waged against Germany. France's military defeat by the forces of the North German Confederation (led by Prussia), which included the South German states, led directly to the founding of the German Empire.
