The mash spring is a so-called layer spring that emerges from the mountain. Such source outlets can be found wherever comparatively young volcanic loose deposits lie on top of the old rocks from the Devonian geological age. Here at the mash spring you can see very well how the water, which seeps away on the surface but cannot penetrate through clay and slate, thus emerges again on the bearing surface.
