Numerous Phoenician finds, including the remains of amphorae from the 7th century BC. BC, show that the island was heavily frequented, probably because of its location on the route between Phoenician Olbia and Etruria.

In 1882 an oval basin (4m x 3m) paved with cocciopesto was discovered which was probably the bottom of an ancient Roman cistern.
