It is the oldest bridge over the Main in Frankfurt. It was originally built of wood and has been rebuilt and destroyed several times over the course of its history - most recently by the Wehrmacht in World War II.

From the Old Bridge you have a wonderful panorama of the Frankfurt skyline.

The Old Bridge was first mentioned in documents on May 10, 1235, making it the oldest bridge over the Main in Frankfurt. It represents an important milestone in the development of the city. For centuries, the Old Bridge was the only connection between the two banks of the Frankfurt River and one of the most important transport routes beyond the city limits. Originally, the Old Bridge was a wooden structure. It was only at the beginning of the 15th century that there were images showing the structure in stone. The current Old Bridge was inaugurated by the then mayor Ludwig Landmann after a new construction between 1912 and 1926. Shortly before the end of World War II, the German Wehrmacht blew up two of its eight arches. After a temporary construction, the bridge was rebuilt in 1965. In 2013, it was renovated, which also gave the Old Bridge a new look. The statue of Charlemagne has been on the bridge again since October 2016. This is a faithful copy of the statue from 1843, which stood on the Old Bridge until 1914 and will have a permanent place in the new building of the Historical Museum. The landmark of the Old Bridge is the crucifix with the golden "Brickegickel" on top. In the 15th century, it was intended to serve as a reminder to repent for sinners who were sentenced to death by drowning at this spot. After restoration, the "Brickegickel" returned to the Old Bridge in November 2017. A special feature is the Main Island, which is located below the bridge on both sides and has changed its shape over the centuries. It is about 300 meters long and about 30 meters wide. Between two bridge pillars in the middle of the Main Island is the boathouse of the Frankfurt Rowing Club from 1865, the oldest rowing club in the city. The Portikus, an exhibition institution for contemporary art, has also been located on the Main Island since 2006. The Portikus exhibition hall has been located here since 2006.

      • Type of construction: arch/box bridge
      • Construction period: 1st bridge 1222 + 2nd bridge 1912-1926 / 1965
      • Total length: 237.36 m
      • Width: 19.50 m
      • Clearance height for ships: 8-9 m
      • Use: - road bridge
      - pedestrian and bicycle bridge

Beautiful views of the Main and the banking district of Frankfurt.

The Old Bridge in Frankfurt am Main is the oldest and was the only stone bridge on the lower reaches of the Main until the middle of the 19th century. From the Middle Ages until 1914, it connected Fahrgasse in Frankfurt's old town with Brückenstraße in Sachsenhausen. Since it was first mentioned in documents in 1222, the development of Frankfurt has been inextricably linked to it. It has been destroyed and rebuilt at least 18 times over the centuries. With its 13 brick arches, the Sachsenhausen Bridge was considered the most important building in the city. Because it could no longer meet the demands of modern road and ship traffic, it was demolished in 1914.

The current Old Bridge, more correctly known as the New Old Bridge, was inaugurated on August 15, 1926 by the then mayor Ludwig Landmann. Two of its original eight arches, clad in red Main sandstone, were blown up by German soldiers on March 26, 1945. After an initially provisional reconstruction, the middle section was replaced by a steel box bridge and put into operation on September 15, 1965. With the New Portico, the Old Bridge was given a building in 2006 that is reminiscent of the former bridge mill. The bridge received its current appearance, characterized by four portal walls on both sides of the middle section, during the renovation in 2014. The landmarks of the Old Bridge are the Brickegickel and the statue of the mythical city founder Charlemagne.
