The sex of Greifberger was first mentioned in 1156. The castle was probably taken over in the 13th century by the dominant ministers of Kirchberg. Greifberg was spared the storm of Erfurter 1304 and fell in 1345 to the Thuringian Landgrave. From the castle except a few moats or a bricked cistern and a partially buried underground passage or cellar vaults have been preserved. The city of Erfurt had temporarily stationed on Greifberg a crew to protect the trade routes. Greifberg was considered the strongest fortified of the castles on the local mountain of Jena.

Abandoned site of the Kirchberg Royal Palace
From the southern path, there are no steps to reach this site; from the northern path, a short, steep staircase leads up to Marienblick. Only the old cistern remains of the royal palace; otherwise, only uneven ground surfaces remain, which, with a bit of imagination, might reveal some of the original structure.
