The wide hiking trail runs directly between the calmly flowing Ruhr and the wide, renatured meadows. From here you have a nice view over the water and over to the Mülheim youth hostel. In the meadows you can also observe many different waterfowl and migratory birds throughout the year.

Below Haus Urge and the Bismarck Tower, directly on the banks of the Ruhr, is the building of the former youth hostel on Kahlenberg, which was built in 1889. In terms of development, it is related to the development of the Kahlenberg as a stately residential area at the turn of the last century.

The Ruhr as a historical recreation area
The Ruhr valley area was already a popular destination for “strolling” at that time. So it is not surprising that the building, which was later used as a youth hostel, originally served as a restaurant for excursions. The restaurant opened in 1890.

Repurposed after 2010
The conversion of the youth hostel into luxury apartments after 2010 shows the continued positive assessment of the location as an exclusive residential location.
