Wikipedia says: The Memorial Temple of the Nativity (Bulgarian: Храм-паметник "Рождество Христово", Hram-pametnik "Rozhdestvo Hristovo"), better known as Shipka Memorial Church or Shipka Monastery, is a nearby Bulgarian Orthodox church The town of Shipka was built in Stara Planina between 1885 and 1902 according to Antoniy Tomishko's design in the 17th century Russian style under the direction of the architect Alexander Pomerantsev. It, along with the other parts of the Shipka memorial complex, is dedicated to the Russians and Bulgarian soldiers who died for the liberation of Bulgaria in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78.
The temple was officially opened on September 28, 1902 in the presence of generals of the Russian army and many honored guests. The opening and dedication of the Shipka Memorial Church coincided with the 25th anniversary of the Battles of Shipka Pass.
