The 35-hectare forest known as the Wildhof has been recognized by the European Commission since 2007 as a Pauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) area with the designation "Forest on Lake Bordesholm". It thus became part of the Europe-wide network of protected areas (biotope network). with the designation NATURA 2000. The Wildhof is to be preserved or developed as a near-natural deciduous forest.
Light, bushy beech forests predominate in the Wildhofwald. Nutrient-poor, acidic locations are characterized by the occurrence of forest millet in the herb layer. Perigras, golden nettle and woodruff grow in nutrient-rich soil conditions. In addition to the dominating copper beech, the oak has a higher proportion in the tree layer in some areas. In places, sycamore maple, more rarely hornbeam or sycamore elm also appear. Alder and ash trees have prevailed in the depressions in the terrain.
