The well-known "Birxsteig" takes its name from the former route manager Roland Schmidt from Oberhof, whose nickname is simply "Birx".
The "Birx-Steig" was devised in honor of Roland Schmidt by his athletes and trainers from the Oberhof sports club and was thus officially named as a section of the route. "Birx" was manager of the track at the Oberhof sports club for many years until he reached retirement age. He has received many national and international awards and his expertise in biathlon course construction is still highly valued by sports clubs and coaches around the world.
