The origin of the Straufhain is clearly explained on this board. The geological outcrop is right next to it and unfortunately has grown in a bit. Otherwise really very interesting. There are several other basalt cones of this type in the area, including the Veste Heldburg mountain and the Gleichberge, which are testament to past volcanic activity.
