Valmont is inextricably linked to the impressionist Eugène Delacroix, who spent several summers here. In the abbey he painted several watercolors and paintings as well as the abbey itself. The image of the abbey hangs today in the Louvre.

The Benedictine abbey was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt in the course of its history. The renaissance-style abbey collapsed in the 18th century and is now a ruin.
