In the middle of the 19th century, peat was extracted from this place, which created the fen. The Turfkoelen is rich in special animals, including the dragonfly. There are unique species, such as the spotted glossy dragonfly. Do you see the dragonfly flying today?

The nature reserve "De Turfkoelen" is a nature area with moorlands and is located on an old arm of the Rur. Together with the adjacent Bruchwald and the higher coniferous forest, the area covers an area of about 11ha. From the name can be deduced that peat was stung here in the past. Here live many species of birds, frogs, toads and newts.

Story
Up until around 1850, peat was extracted from the bog. Up until about 1920, the vegetation around the moor, made up in part of hollow pipes, was mowed to serve as straw for livestock. Until the 20th century, the moor belonged to Geraedts-Laumans, a family of timber merchants. That is why the bog is also called Laumansven. In 1956 the south-eastern part of the area was bought by Het Limburgs Landschap. The northwestern part is communal property.
In 1999 some of the pools were dredged.
Nature
The lake is covered with yellow bulging. Various waterfowl breed there, including the little dragon, and there are about 20 species of dragonflies. Plants such as wild gale and royal fern live in the willow and alder breeches on the banks. Other riparian plants are, in addition to hollow perforations, a number of other sedge species and peat fluff.
