The Susmühle was built around the year 1700. It is the only preserved historical watermill in the city and was located outside of the city walls in sight of the stone gate. Until the 18th century, the Susmühle was merely an addition to the town's Lohmühle from 1523 and was then known as the "Loo Mühle". Eventually it replaced the actual wage mill entirely. In the following years it also served as an oil and grain mill.

Towards the end of the 19th century it was equipped with an auxiliary steam drive. When the course of the Niers was straightened in 1932, the water level sank by around two meters, which made it impossible to operate as a water mill, as the mill wheels could no longer hold water. The mill was then shut down.

Today the Susmühle serves as a residential building and is a listed building. The historic metal mill wheel was restored a few years ago.
