The Altmain nature reserve is an area of particular importance for the preservation of biological diversity in Lower Franconia. It covers several sections of the Main that are characterized by their natural design and their diversity of species. Habitats worth protecting include rivers, floodplain forests, sandy grasslands, wet meadows and quarry lakes. The Altmain nature reserve offers a habitat for many rare and endangered animal and plant species, such as the kingfisher, the beaver, the pond turtle and the pasqueflower. The Altmain nature reserve is also an attractive destination for nature lovers and those seeking relaxation who can enjoy the beauty and diversity of the river landscape. There are several hiking and cycling trails that lead through the area and provide an insight into the different facets of the nature reserve.
