A building on the market square that was representative of the time is the Old Town Hall. The council met here and conducted business, issued regulations and administered justice. After the great fire in 1557 reduced almost the entire town of Peine and its town hall to rubble, several town halls were rebuilt in the same location in the following centuries. The Old Town Hall was built in 1827.

Council builder Fütterer added the city coat of arms in 1858. On the ground floor there was a Ratskeller with a cellar innkeeper.

Several times a day, high up in the tower of the Old Town Hall on the historic market square, a small door opens and the trumpeter appears and announces the start of the carillon.

Depending on the time of year, three different pieces will sound one after the other from the tower of the Old Town Hall: between the beginning of January and mid-June:

“Thoughts are free” by Walther von der Vogelweide
"Joy, beautiful spark of the gods: Daughter from Elysium" (from the 9th Symphony) by Ludwig van Beethoven
“Always practice loyalty and honesty” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
between mid-June and the end of October:

“Now come the fun days” by Hannes Wader
“Glückauf der Steiger is coming” by Theodor Salzmann
“Must I then, must I then go out to the Städtele” by Friedrich Silcher (1st verse) and Heinrich Wagner (2nd and 3rd verses)
between November and the 1st Advent:

“Morning splendor of eternity” by Christan Knorr von Rosenroth
"There were two children of the king" by unknown author
“Now all forests are at rest” by Paul Gerhardt
During Advent and Christmas:

“The snow falls quietly” by Eduard Ebel
“Oh you cheerful one” by Johannes Daniel Falk
“Kling, Glöckchen, klingelingeling” by Karl Enslin
The chimes can be heard daily at 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. and every hour from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
