Over one mile, the Trail of the Molten Land invites you into the rough world of the eruptions around Lava Butte. There are lots of interesting information boards that show you the history and facts in a great visual way.

The geologic history of Oregon on display as you walk this trail is incredible. Interpretative signs explain many facets of the unique landscape - from the eruption history to the flora and fauna that live there. The volcanic history of Central Oregon is told here, and it is worth a stop!

The Newberry volcano in Central Oregon has gigantic proportions and is (latently) active. On the northern edge, a few miles south of Bend, about 7000 years ago, one of its most recent eruptions took place, leaving a landscape that was almost raw until today. At the Lava Lands Visitor Center, a short nature trail, the Trail of the Molten Land, leads directly into the geological scene: very impressive and well done!
