Here and there were still remnants of heathland on the Bolderberg. In 1989, Limburgs Landschap vzw was given the opportunity to manage some of these plots and restore the heathland. The Gust Claesheide is the result of this heathland restoration.

In addition to the current name of the witness hill and the village, Bolderberg is also the name of the nature reserve at this location. This varied nature reserve consists of various parts. Here you are in the part called Gust Claesheide. As you can read on the information board, Gust Claes was a local school principal with a passion for plants, animals and people. Apart from that, however, this is only one of the two forms of heathland you will find on Bolderberg: dry heathland in particular, consisting of those typical Kempen sandy soils. You will undoubtedly notice it when you walk here, but also take a look at its history and management as explained on the information board of Limburgs Landschap vzw that tells you all about it, here in the middle of the Gust Claesheide. After all, dry heath does not just happen, but above all it does not just stay there. Moreover, a dry heathland has its own flora and fauna, with a lot of life and ecologically important events under all that sand.

The heathland area on the Bolderberg known as the Gust Claesheide is named after the Bolderberg school principal Gust Claes (1927-1978), who did a lot to spread knowledge about and love for nature.
