The original version of the memorial created by the sculptor Bernhard Heller ("Hellerbernd") in 1921 showed the horrors of death in war: a stretched out soldier with a lost lower leg, a skull and a rat gnawing on the soldier's fingers. The National Socialists had no use for this unheroic depiction and had the skull and rat cut off as early as 1933 after Hellerbernd refused to do it himself.

An information board next to the memorial reminds us of this story.

Not a "highlight" in the literal sense, but a place that you shouldn't pass by without paying attention.
