This is called "kühlken" in Low German.

Beautiful, well-kept half-timbered houses in the idyllic... charming old town of Hattingen🧭

The more than 140 picturesque half-timbered buildings have been lovingly restored around the small St. George's Church in the town center.🎨
The old town is particularly atmospheric in the run-up to Christmas, when the popular Christmas market takes place.🌲

The name of Emschestrasse is reminiscent of a small
stream that ran along this street.
Over time, it was piped and filled in and the street paved. Here, where Johannisstrasse meets Emschestrasse, a marshy area had formed, which was known in Low German as "dat Kühlken". Because of the high groundwater level, the
houses around Kühlken all have high entrances.
The house "Am Kühlken", today Emschestrasse 21, is a fine example of a classicist half-timbered house.
Built in 1816 to replace an older predecessor building, it is characterized by its strictly symmetrical, strutless facade. Here, the large, classicist
windows were not broken in later, as in many other older half-timbered houses, but were part of the original furnishings.
