The Teufelsmauer was probably built about 80 million years ago. Due to shifts of different rocks, the Harz region was created and partly created bizarre rock formations and caves. The soft sandstone could be partially washed out by wind and water and caves were created.
An old legend tells of a shepherd who was once traveling with his flock in the Helsunger Bruch when a severe summer thunderstorm approached. The shepherd, named Ulrich, realized that he would not reach his village of Timmenrode unscathed.
