This square was built during the Third Republic (after Napoleon III). The plan was made so prestigious that this square had to show that one is in a capital city. Although today much of that prestige has been lost. That is the impression you get. The metro station under this square is one of the most beautiful in Lille.
On the right you see the Préfecture (commissariat). This impressive palace was built in the same period, namely in 1869. On the left is the Palace of Fine Arts. It is one of the richest museums in the region and the second most important in France after the Louvre. So you see mainly paintings by the Flemish Primitives, the Flemish School 17th century, the Dutch School 17th century, the French School from the 17th to the 19th century, the Italian and Spanish School, the Impressionists and Contemporary painting. On the ground floor you will find sculptures and other art objects, with temporary exhibitions.
