After the Second World War, nearly 4,000 churches in France were damaged. Within the financial limits imposed by war damage, the reconstruction of 2,500 churches thus gave rise to a proliferation of original forms, facilitated by new construction techniques and progress in the industrialization of building. The church of Royan is one of these churches rebuilt in this way, resulting in this singular monument of raw art in concrete.
We can debate a lot about its aesthetic qualities. But it has become the symbol of the seaside town, no doubt because it is its most visible monument.
The church was blessed on July 10, 1958, but the budget envelope only made it possible to carry out the main work. Over time, stained glass windows and an imposing organ were added. However, the west canopy, doors and other openings remain unfinished compared to the initial plans. The building also suffers from watertightness problems, greatly accentuated by the aggressiveness of the marine environment. At the current rate, it is estimated that it would take fifty years to ensure the completion and sustainability of the building!
The night lighting of the church is particularly successful.
