The war memorial on Petersberg was erected in 1880 in the grounds of Sedanstrasse (today Rudolf-Breitscheid-Strasse) and consists of a granite obelisk that rests on an antique pedestal with a step base. The design comes from Ludwig Bohnstedt and is reminiscent of the German wars of unification.

The monument is one of the cultural monuments of the city of Nordhausen, is ten meters high and was built in the style of the late 19th century. The obelisk bears the four dates from the founding of the Reich: 1864 (German-Danish War), 1866 (German War) and 1870/71 (German-French War). The inscription on the pedestal reads: "Dedicated by the city of Nordhausen in 1880 to the memory of their sons who died for the fatherland."

The foundation stone was laid on Sedan Day on September 2, 1877, which remained a public holiday until 1918. In 1917, captured French guns were set up.

The entire area was destroyed by the air raids on Nordhausen in 1945, but the war memorial itself was only slightly damaged.
