City Garden, Winterthur
The city garden is located in the heart of Winterthur and, thanks to its central location, is very popular not only with the residents of the old town. In addition, spacious lawns, flower beds, a water basin with a fountain, a large children's playground and numerous seating areas for young and old make it an attractive destination.

History, City Garden, Winterthur
History: up to the 19th century: The area of today's City Garden was home to private city gardens belonging to wealthy Winterthur residents. 1898: The city of Winterthur purchased the Sulzer Garden and the Busch Garden as the foundation stone for the City Garden. 1902: The City Garden was redesigned according to plans by landscape architect Mertens. The enthusiastic people of Winterthur referred to the area as the "City Garden". 1913-1916: During these years, Rittmeyer and Furrer built the art museum adjacent to the City Garden, a pioneering building of Swiss neo-classicism. 1939-1945: During the Second World War, potatoes and vegetables were grown in the park, which was so popular with the people as a city garden. 1946: The city buys the land of the Strauss, Rheinfels and Merz-Rieter-Gut areas, which extends the city garden to Merkurstrasse. 1948-51: After an ideas competition, the city garden is redesigned according to the winning project by the garden architect Walter Leder. 1862: The old town schoolhouse is built according to plans by Ferdinand Stadler. 1865 - 1870: The city hall is built by Gottfried Semper (1803 - 1879), professor of architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH). 2008: As part of the "Winterthur City Light" project, the so-called cultural axis with the city garden is newly illuminated. The elegant city park with its mighty trees, the carefully placed sculptures and the well-kept flowers is the green lung right in the center. Various tree rarities make the city park something special. So there are American sequoias, a slit-leaved beech, a real sugar maple and a rare horse chestnut.
