The Great Sea Lock in Emden is a lock in the port of Emden in the Port Arthur/Transvaal district. It connects the Emden inland port with the Emden outer port and thus also with the Ems.
The lock was built between 1907 and 1913. A new harbor basin, the new inland port, was also built with the construction. After the Nesserland lock (built in 1888), it is the second seaward lock in the port of Emden. Its usable length is 260 meters and it is 40 meters wide. The Jamb depth of the sea lock is today SKN -9.76 meters; this corresponds to NN −11.96 meters.[1]

With a length of 260 meters, it was considered one of the largest sea locks of its kind in the world for some time after its completion in 1913.

The Great Sea Lock is primarily used for sea shipping. Due to the new construction of the Nesserland lock, which was closed from 2006, it was also used for inland navigation and recreational shipping until April 16, 2018. As a result, more ships than usual were locked using the Great Sea Lock. On average (2012) around 6000 smuggling operations are carried out per year.[2]

In the 1990s, the lock was renovated. the lock gates were replaced. The floating sliding gates have a clear width of 42 meters, are 20 meters high and 7 meters wide. Their weight is 860 tons.[3] During locks, the gates slide on runners.

Vehicles up to 2.00 meters wide and with a total weight of up to 7.5 tons can pass through the outer and inner main part of the lock. Large vehicles must bypass the port.

The service life predicted when the Great Sea Lock was built was estimated at around 100 years. Due to extensive adjustments and renovations, also due to a greatly increased number of locks, it is assumed that the Great Sea Lock will be operational for another 20 years.[4] Studies on the Great Sea Lock should show whether a new construction or conversion of the lock is necessary.
