    Long freight trains that were popularly known as “Langer Heinrich” ran from the port of Emden to the Ruhr area and later to Saarland. These ore trains were pulled by class 042 and 043 steam locomotives. After the Second World War, they ensured a continuous supply of the important raw material. One of the locomotives that pulled these cars is the memorial locomotive on display in front of Emden train station.

    In primary operation, i.e. with two steam locomotives, the trains were up to 50 wagons long and pulled a load of up to 4,000 tons. When operated individually with one locomotive, a load of up to 2,000 tons was pulled.

      The end of the steam locomotive

      The Deutsche Bundesbahn, the predecessor of Deutsche Bahn AG, issued a ban on steam locomotives in 1977, which resulted in the end of the steam locomotive era in West Germany. By the way, steam locomotives ran in the GDR until 1988.

      Originally, the Deutsche Bundesbahn wanted to switch to diesel and electric locomotives - also for business reasons - and had already loudly announced in its advertising campaign in 1968 "Our locomotives are getting used to smoking."

      But it wasn't that easy for the Emsland line, as it was not electrified and there were not enough powerful diesel locomotives to pull the heavy freight trains. So the final farewell to the steam locomotive in East Frisia and Emsland took almost 9 years.

      At the end of October 1977, most of the steam locomotives in West Germany had already stopped their regular service and were only running in shunting traffic, when on October 26th, 1977 the last 3 steam locomotives in normal service also came to an end on the Emsland line.
