The great local history museum in Skógar was founded in 1949 by Þórður Tómasson (1921-2022). The founder himself was a museum director and curator for decades. On our last visit in 2012, we were lucky enough to be guided through the museum and the adjoining church by Mr. Tómasson himself, and were able to marvel at his skills on the spindle and organ. Even without Mr Tómasson, who left us in early 2022 after a long life, the museum offers an impressive collection of Icelandic history, art and technology. If you visit the no less impressive waterfall next door, you should also plan a detour to the museum. So you can spend a wonderful half day of vacation in Skógar.

The Skógar Museum, also known as Skógasafn, is a cultural heritage museum. The museum offers an extensive collection of approximately 18,000 regional folk artifacts displayed in three museums and six historic buildings. The museum also has an outdoor area where you can explore a reconstructed turf house, an old church and a blacksmith shop. The museum also offers various activities, such as guided tours, lectures and workshops. The Skógar Museum is known for its beautiful location in a valley surrounded by mountains and waterfalls, making it a great place to both learn about Iceland's history and enjoy the area's breathtaking natural beauty.
