The fat Churchill liked to spend time here and paint. The bay probably reminded him of Cornwall or other parts of England.

British tourists in particular like to have their photo taken in front of the Pestana Churchill Bay Hotel, the small, almost picturesque hotel in the fishing port of Câmara de Lobos.
The reason is quite simple. The British Prime Minister spent his vacation on Madeira in early 1950. He was chauffeured here in a Rolls Royce - as an amateur painter, he was particularly fond of the bay of Câmara de Lobos.
Now there is a bronze statue directly in front of the hotel entrance that commemorates his passion. With a cigar, a piece of chalk in his hand and a Panama hat, Sir Winston is waiting for your visit... and... here you go: selfie!!!!

When Winston Churchill came here, he was looking for 'a warm, picturesque and colorful seaside resort'. Camara de Lobos did not disappoint him and the residents are still very proud to this day that this celebrity visited their village. The place where he sat down to paint is even named after him: Miradouro Winston Churchill.
