The Dortmund Gestapo committed mass murders with hundreds of victims in both Romberg Park and Bittermark.

"The memorial in Romberg Park is a central component of Dortmund's culture of remembrance. In addition to the memorial plaque, there is a "Living Memorial - Korbinian's Apple": This apple variety originated in the Dachau concentration camp from a selection of seedlings by the imprisoned pastor Korbinian Aigner, who managed to escape at the end of the war and planted three seedlings in his garden. Called "concentration camp apples" by him, one of the three varieties was later renamed Korbinian's Apple in his honor and memory. It serves not only as a memorial to the victims, but also as a warning to future generations not to repeat the mistakes of the past. It symbolizes the need to confront history and the obligation to uphold human rights.
