The Domnapf, seldom also the cathedral bowl, is a large bowl made of sandstone in front of the Imperial Cathedral in the city of Speyer (Rhineland-Palatinate). According to tradition, after each new election of a bishop, it is to be filled with wine "for the whole people". The bowl holds 1580 liters and bears a Latin inscription. (Wikipedia)

The bowl is in front of the entrance to the cathedral and anyone who violated city law and fled to the cathedral bowl was protected from prosecution. The cathedral bowl no longer fulfills these historical functions. However, a popular medieval custom is still maintained into modern times. On special church occasions, the cathedral bowl is filled with 🍷wine. With a capacity of over 1,500 liters, many citizens and guests can taste the vine juice. The last time this happened was on the 950th anniversary of the consecration of Speyer Cathedral on October 2nd, 2011.
