Mills are the oldest machines in the world!
The history of the mills begins with the cultivation of grain by nomads who have settled down. Around 4000 BC This early grinding stone technique can be traced back to Old Babylon and later also to the Egyptians and Assyrians. At the next stage in the development of grinding technology, there are mortars in which the grain is crushed. From these mortars, so-called trough or hand mills (Querne) gradually developed, in which a turning stone in a uniformly hollowed-out bottom stone is set in rotating motion by means of a handle.
In the next stage of development are mills powered by animal power. The turning or runner stone is equipped with a drawbar and in a perpetual cycle the animal turns the runner stone on the floor stone and grinds the grain between the two stones. Instead of animals, people were often used for this work.
