The Hurkske, originally mainly a heathland, is an approx. 170 ha. large forest area between Erp and Gemert, which is surrounded by agricultural areas. It consists of coniferous forest and mixed forest. Located in it is the Rauwven, a beautiful fen with somewhat calcareous water. A beautiful palette of amphibian and plant species can be found in the fen and its immediate surroundings. The rare swamp deer hay grows on the banks and the viviparous lizard can be encountered in bare, sunlit spots.

Until around the turn of the century, Rauwven was the last refuge for the distant environment of the garlic toad, one of the rarest and most endangered amphibian species in the Netherlands.

There are several detours in the Het Hurkske nature reserve. There are long and short routes to follow in the woods. Ommetje Hurkske is fully wheelchair accessible. There are three starting points where you can park the car. Enjoy on a terrace afterwards!

You will see special trees, beautiful nature and elements that originated in times long past. Every walk has its charm. Along the routes you will see signs with interesting information about the flora and fauna. In this diverse area you will find a rich variety of diverse plant species, frogs and toads, lizards, birds, mammals and a great wealth of mushrooms.
