There used to be 12 towers along the course of the medieval Hersfeld city wall. The Klausturm is one of the few that have been preserved. The round tower was used as a watch and prison tower and served as a fortification for the Klaustor, which was demolished between 1795 and 1820 and was located very close by on the north-east side of the old town. The ground-level passage through the tower was created much later. In 1988, the Klausturm with its distinctive left-turned bell hood underwent extensive restoration.
