In Belgium, beavers were wiped out in 1848. From about 1990 there were obviously individual animals that immigrated to Belgium from the Eifel. Due to various naturalizations in Wallonia and Flanders, beavers are again widespread in large parts of Belgium.

The Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) was originally native to Europe and Asia, but was hunted to extinction in large parts of Europe and almost all of Germany in the 19th century. Due to consistent protective measures and reintroductions in the 20th century, the population of the beaver has recovered in the last few decades. It lives in slow-flowing and stagnant waters with groves near the shore. Like no other animal, the beaver shapes the landscape according to its own requirements:
He fells trees, builds castles and dams and dams streams. In this way, he not only creates a suitable habitat for himself, but also for many plants and animals. Beavers cut down trees. They sit on their hind legs and gnaw trees about half a meter above the ground, across the trunk. They dig into the bark with their upper incisors and grate with their lower ones. This creates two parallel, almost 10 mm wide grooves around the entire trunk - the typical "hourglass shape".
THE BEAVER TROWEL:
The beaver trowel is the broadly flattened, scaly tail and a true multifunctional organ: It serves as a steering wheel when swimming, as a means of communication in the event of danger by slapping it on the water surface, as a fat store in winter, as a support when sitting and for Cool off on hot days by holding it in cold water.
