#04 - When Jules Verne dreamed up the future of Amiens

This place has changed a lot since the time I knew it. It is the starting point of my short story An Ideal City, which I presented to the Amiens Academy on December 12, 1875, and in which I find myself in an Amiens of the future. When I leave my house, I realize that the city has changed a lot during the night, as if new parts of the city had sprung up like mushrooms. I discover a whole series of more or less important changes throughout downtown Amiens.
An ideal city is a quirky little story in which I stage myself. I am referring in particular to this square, then called Place Montplaisir (now Place du Maréchal Joffre), the boulevards, the gardens, the monument to the celebrities of Picardy and the bandstand that was then there and where concerts were regularly held. I hear the “music of the future”: “No more melody, no meter, no more harmony! Captivating beyond measure! The essence of Wagner! Sonorous algebra! The triumph of dissonance!”
