      The first document mentioning Colmar comes from the year 823, when Louis the Pious donated to the monastery of Münster a plot of land from the region Columbarium. This region probably consisted of a few estates back then. Over the years, the community developed, and at the beginning of the 12th century under the feudal lordship of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen to the city. At this time, various religious communities settle, such as Franciscans, Dominicans, Augustiners, ...

       In 1354, the merger of the ten imperial cities of Alsace created the famous Ten-Towns League, which defended the status and security of the city. This alliance existed until the French Revolution. To the detriment of the nobility, at that time the bourgeoisie administered the city.

       The Golden Age of Colmar is the 15th and 16th centuries, where numerous magnificent buildings are created. Trade and agriculture enrich the city. Colmar survives the turmoil of the Reformation in 1575 unscathed.

       The Thirty Years' War is leading to major upheavals. The city is ruined and goes first under the protectorate of Sweden, then of France. After the war, the city tries to regain its independence, but Louis XIV does not give up his power. Colmar has to yield and becomes a royal city in 1678 by the Nimogue Treaty, but the city is still allowed to keep some of its privileges. Colmar is slowly becoming French ... Colmar becomes the seat of the Haut-Rhin prefecture.

       In 1870 Colmar and its region are ceded to Germany. After 1918, the city belongs again to France, to be under German rule again in World War II. Today it is the third big city of Alsace. Colmar is considered calm and bourgeois.
