The ruin is 650 meters on a granite rock. The origin of the castle can be traced back to the noble family de Prenberg at the beginning of the 11th century. Presumably Wernher I. de Prenberg erected the first building on the western castle hill. The best-known resident was Reimar von Brennenberg, who was a knight and minstrel in the 13th century. On his crusades, there were seven in all, he got to know new cultures, legends and fairy tales, which gave him inspiration for his poems and songs. A total of ten songs by him have been preserved.
