"...In order to be able to entertain as many people as possible with elaborate spectacles, Roman engineers invented a new design: the theater enclosed on both sides (Greek: amphi-). The APX is one of the few places north of the Alps where the fascination of this once colossal buildings become noticeable.

Large public events such as the fights in the amphitheater and the chariot races in the circus were by far the most popular entertainment for large parts of the population. The large amphitheaters in Rome and the provinces were regularly filled to capacity as people and animals fought to the death in the arena. Even emperors like Marcus Aurelius, who despised the cruel demonstrations, felt compelled to fulfill their duty as organizers of the "games".

We know from the vivid descriptions of ancient authors that on event days people from near and far flocked to the cities to watch the spectacles. It would have been no different in Xanten, where the amphitheater was built in the extreme eastern corner of the colonia in order to keep noise and dirt away from the densely built-up residential areas. The open area around it made access easier for the masses of visitors. The amphitheater's capacity of around 10,000 seats corresponded roughly to the population of the Colonia..."
