The Raso de Portillo Lagoons are a valuable natural and ornithological resource that offers a vital habitat for various species of birds in the region. 🌿🦆
Until the 19th century, this area was a wetland that covered 1900 hectares. However, it was gradually dried to favor crop fields and prevent diseases such as malaria transmitted by insects1. The current lagoons are the result of a restoration carried out starting in 2012 by the Duero Hydrographic Confederation during its II Riverside Restoration Plan. This body is also responsible for regulating the area. Despite their recent creation, these lagoons have already acquired great importance for birds that live in humid environments or are passing through.
