This magnificent construction of 1934 in the modernist style is the place where an activity as important as that of retailing takes place, with a long tradition in Carcaixent.
The daily market was established in Carcaixent at the beginning of the 19th century. Located in the current Plaça de Miguel Hernández, a space was established where there was public sale of meat, vegetables and other edible products, which made it known by the name of Plaça de la Verdura.
Until that moment, the population did not have much need to stock up on vegetables, fruits or legumes, since the majority were farmers and planted estes and other vegetables. Meat was sold to butchers, who also dispensed groceries, and tobacco was sold to barbers.
With the growth of the orange trade and, therefore, of the population that lived in Carcaixent and that did not own land, the need was created to establish a fixed point of sale so that people could buy food for to daily food, and it was at that moment when the retail market was born.
With the change in the 20th century, one of the most important urban planning needs that arose was the construction of a new building for the market, since the economic importance of the population and health provisions demanded it.
On December 2, 1925, the Carcaixent City Council met in plenary session and approved the implementation of an important Reform Plan for the city. Among many other works, it provided for the construction of a new Municipal Market.
