The "Castell de Xàtiva" is located on the old road Via Augusta, which leads from Rome over the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean coast down to Cartagena and Cádiz. It thus held a very favorable strategic position and for a long time was considered one of the strongest fortresses in the Kingdom of Valencia. The fortress is divided into two parts. Firstly, the part of the Castillo Menor built on the Iberian and Roman remains. This is the oldest part of the castle and offers fantastic views of the Bixquert valley.
The other part of the Castle of Xàtiva is the Castillo Mayor, built only after the Middle Ages. It is the largest and best preserved part of the fort. It has imposing walls and became the main defensive fortress after King Jaume I conquered it.
