A walk along the Bergse Havenkwartier will surprise you.
Around 1500 the harbor was added to the city. Many international ships then came to our free annual fairs. There is a lot to tell about this beautiful part of Bergen op Zoom. The walk takes you to the historic Tidal Water Mill (+/- 1520), the arsenals that were used by the military at the time, the former sugar factory, the Spuihuis and the Zeeuws Tolhuis.

The walk takes approximately 1.5 hours

On the outside of the Gevangenpoort was the harbour district, where the activity along the quays continued to develop. That is why the area was later walled and incorporated into the city. In the previous century, part of the harbour was filled in and used as a car park. At the head of the filled-in harbour is the Spuihuis, which was built in 1838 on the foundations of a warehouse. The harbour master lived in this house.

The eye-catcher in the harbour is the Nedalco Chimney, from the former Zuid Nederlandse Spiritusfabriek, which towers above everything else. It is one of the highest brick chimneys in the Netherlands. The tower was once 75 metres high, but for safety reasons the top was removed. It is now 63 metres high.
