In Freudenstadt, Heinrich Schickhardt is particularly known as the architect of the town itself, a masterpiece of urban planning. Schickhardt, who lived from 1558 to 1635, is considered the most important Renaissance architect in Württemberg. Commissioned by Duke Frederick I of Württemberg, he designed numerous buildings and developed various machines used in wells, mills, and saltworks. Reflecting the extent of Württemberg's territory at that time, which from 1324 to 1796 also included the County of Montbéliard and Alsatian holdings around Horbourg and Riquewihr, Schickhardt's buildings can now be found in Germany, France, and even Switzerland.
