    Due to the Variscan orogeny about 300 million years ago, this subsoil folded in waves, forming saddles and humps of stratified rock. The weathering paved most of the saddles again, in some places such as on the Tillmannsdorfer saddle this folding has been preserved to the present day.

      Tillmanndorfer Fold is a geological outcrop, which, like a window, allows an insight into the geological structure and tectonics of the Düsselhügelland.
      In the Carboniferous (hard coal age), marine sediments were deposited here as lime sludge in a shallow sea, beginning around 330 million years ago. They mainly consisted of calcareous skeletal remains of dead sea creatures. Over the course of many millions of years, these deposits solidified to form a layered rock, coal lime.
      The Devonian followed the Carboniferous. During this time, beginning about 290 million years ago, the originally horizontal layers were unfolded by enormous forces in the earth's interior (plate tectonics). The Variskische Gebirge (Rhenish Slate Mountains) emerged with saddles and hollows. While weathering leveled most of the bulges (saddles) again in the following millions of years, in some places like here with the Tillmannsdorfer fold (also called Tillmansdorfer saddle) the saddle and fold were preserved. The older geological layers are in the core of the saddle, they become younger towards the outside.
