The Ratzeburg Cathedral is an outstanding example of Romanesque brick architecture in Northern Germany. The construction started by Heinrich the Lion around 1165 was completed in 1220 and still shapes the silhouette of the island city today. The cathedral and the adjoining cathedral monastery have impressive art treasures, including the medieval choir stalls, the early Gothic triumphal cross (around 1260), the passion relief in the winged altar (1420) and the carved Renaissance pulpit (1576). In the inner courtyard of the monastery you can admire Ernst Barlach's bronze figure of the beggar on crutches and on the gable of the south transept, the "Ratzeburg bowling game" tells a legend from Ratzeburg's eventful history. The famous “cathedral music” will also accompany you musically throughout the year.
