After several other owners, most recently Count Basselet von la Rosée, the castle and the two court brands finally came into the possession of Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria in 1834. His daughter Elisabeth, who later became Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Queen of Hungary (Sisi), spent her childhood here.

From the historic train station in Possenhofen it is still a short way to the castle. There is a nice footpath all around, partly through the forest and along the lake. The castle itself cannot be visited as it is privately owned.
