The most impressive thing about St. John is the view when you leave the church: it goes from the small hill on which Giekau lies, into the near distance to Lake Selenter. Just great!

Giekau is a typically rural community. Large parts have been declared landscape and nature reserves in recent years. The community of Giekau today has around 1,100 inhabitants and covers 3,250 hectares, of which 400 hectares are forest and 440 hectares are covered by lakes.

The community became an insider tip for holiday guests. The Seekrug bathing area on Selenter See is very popular not only in its own community, but also in neighboring communities in summer. The community of Giekau also offers good opportunities for cyclists and nature lovers, as numerous hiking and cycling paths lead through the beautiful nature. Every district is also very easy to reach.
There are various restaurants in the community, which are also attractive excursion destinations.

The early Gothic hall church is dedicated to the Apostle John. It was built in the 13th century; It was first mentioned in the Lübeck church register in 1259. The rectangular hall has a flat beamed ceiling typical of donor churches. The furnishings include a carved altar from around 1500, the wooden pulpit from 1591 and a stone baptism from 1787.
