The Armory
Located in the area of the former Reuss Front, the Armory, which today houses the German Road Museum, the municipal art association and the miniature railway system, was an important part of the fortress as a material and weapons depot.

The German Road Museum is a museum in the Palatinate town of Germersheim. It is the only museum in Germany that deals comprehensively with the topic of roads.

History
It was founded in 1989 through the private initiative of several road builders and shows exhibits from the early days to the present of road and especially bridge construction on an exhibition area of around 5,000 square meters.

The museum is financed by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, through donations and contributions from its members.

The museum is housed in the former armory of the Germersheim fortress.

A variety of road topics on 5,000 square meters
We show the development of the road from a beaten track to a high-tech highway. Here you can see a 2,000-year-old original plank path and learn something about modern building materials such as whisper asphalt.

We show ultra-modern road pavers as well as historical horse-drawn rollers. We show you the tools used by engineers, from planning with surveying instruments to testing building materials in the laboratory.

A separate department is dedicated to the topic of "tunnel and bridge construction".

Outside you will find many large machines such as road rollers, crawler pavers, a complete historical roller train and the first concrete breaker from Wirtgen.

The exhibition compartments for road maintenance and traffic safety are located in the moat of the old fortress building.
